So this week, two former NBA players - Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White - announced they're "declaring" for the WNBA draft. Not because they want to play women's basketball. Because they want to make a point about trans women in sport. It's a bit, dressed up as 'activism' and lets be honest, straight up misogyny.

Let's actually look at it.

Start with the obvious: no trans woman currently plays in the WNBA. This entire stunt is responding to a hypothetical, not a reality. There is no wave of trans athletes "dominating" women's basketball. There isn't one on a WNBA roster right now. The premise the stunt is built on doesn't exist.

And that's the pattern whenever this debate flares up - it's rarely about actual results. It's about a feeling that something might happen, stoked hard enough that people forget to check whether it's happening at all.

Then there's the "gotcha" itself, which reveals more than it thinks it does. The idea seems to be: watch how absurd it is when a man says he's a woman in sports. But that's not how any of this works, and the fact that they think it is tells you they haven't done fifteen minutes of reading. Trans women who compete under sport-specific policies go through years of hormone therapy and have to meet strict, measured eligibility thresholds - testosterone levels, timelines, medical oversight - set by the sport's own governing bodies. It is not a costume. It's not a wig and a jersey. It's a genuinely difficult, monitored, medical process that these two clearly know nothing about, because if they did, they wouldn't have framed it as a joke you can "declare" your way into on a Friday afternoon.

On the athletic side, this framing also erases something inconvenient: trans men. If you believe that people assigned female at birth simply can't hold their own once testosterone enters the picture, you have to explain athletes like Chris Mosier, who qualified for Team USA in duathlon and became the first openly trans man to make a U.S. national team in his sport, or Patricio Manuel, the first transgender boxer to compete professionally in the U.S., or Schuyler Bailar, the first openly trans athlete to compete on an NCAA Division I men's team. Trans men train, compete, and hold their own alongside men every day. Nobody's declaring for the NFL draft to make a point about that. The silence is the point - this outrage only shows up in one direction.

And the stunt's own centrepiece undercuts itself. Royce White's NBA career amounted to three games and zero points. That's not a knock - injuries, mental health, circumstance, all of it is real and worth compassion. But it does mean the loudest voice in this "protest" isn't speaking from some place of basketball authority being threatened. Enes Kanter Freedom, to be fair, had a genuinely strong 11-year NBA career. But a long career in the men's game isn't a qualification for understanding what trans women athletes actually go through, and it isn't evidence of anything about women's basketball at all.

None of this is really about who plays where. It's a headline-grabbing gesture dressed as concern for women's sports, from people who are looking to further their right wing grift and quite clearly have never talked to a trans woman, a doctor, or a governing body about how any of this actually works. 

We stand with trans women in sport. Full stop.
